Chourio Named Player of the Week

Chourio led the Carolina League in OPS, slugging, home runs and total bases last week

ZEBULON - The Carolina Mudcats, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball, are thrilled to announce that outfielder Jackson Chourio has been named the Carolina League’s Player of the Week for the week ending on June 5. Chourio, the No. 43 prospect in Minor League Baseball as ranked by Baseball America, led the Carolina League in OPS (1.382), slugging (.920), home runs (3), and total bases (23) during the last week of games.

In all, the 18-year-old Chourio went 11-for-25 while hitting .440/.462/.920 with a 1.382 OPS, four runs, one double, one triple, three home runs and eight RBI over six games played in Lynchburg from May 30 through June 5. On top of leading the league in OPS, slugging, home runs, and total bases; Chourio was also fifth in average, tied for first in hits, tied for first in RBI and tied for first in extra-base hits.

Chourio’s award-winning week spanned six games, with all six coming on the road at Bank of the James Stadium in Lynchburg versus the Hillcats. The Maracaibo, Venezuela born Chourio began his week going 1-for-4 on May 31, before going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI the following night on June 1 in Lynchburg. He homered again while going 1-for-5 on June 2, and went 1-for-3 with a walk on June 3. Chourio then closed the week with back-to-back three hit games while going 3-for-4 with a RBI triple on June 4, and 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and three RBI on June 5.

Chourio hit safely in each of his six games running from May 31 through June 5, thus running his current hitting streak to 12 consecutive games. Chourio has also reached base safely in 20 consecutive games.

Chourio is the second Carolina Mudcats player to earn a Carolina League Player of the Week award this season. Chourio took home the Week 9 honor, while Hedbert Perez won the same award for Week 8, giving the Mudcats back-to-back Player of the Week award winners.
