Cornielle Totals 10 Ks and Perez Homers in 6-0 Victory

SALISBURY – Alexander Cornielle struck out 10 over six scoreless innings, Hedbert Perez hit his 13th home run of the season, Eric Brown Jr. doubled and tripled while going 2-for-4, and Jose Sibrian drove in two runs as the Carolina Mudcats shut out the Delmarva Shorebirds 6-0 on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD.

The shutout victory was the second for the Mudcats (21-20, 55-52) in their current series with the Shorebirds (15-26, 36-70). It was also Carolina’s second shutout road win of the season. The game five of six victory also gave the Carolina a 3-2 lead in the six-game set.

Cornielle (8-7) allowed hits in the first and fifth, but stifled the Delmarva offense over six complete frames while earning his second straight victory. In all, he scattered just the two hits and totaled 10 strikeouts while reaching double digits in punchouts for the second time this season. He also closed what was his second straight scoreless start with seven straight strikeouts before reaching 93 pitches and facing just three over the minimum. The Mudcats have won each of Cornielle’s last five starts.

Relievers Michele Vassalotti and Leoni De La Cruz followed Cornielle. Vassalotti tossed two scoreless innings and struck out one while working the seventh and eighth. De La Cruz then finished the game with a walk and a strikeout while pitching a scoreless ninth.

After a scoreless first, Jadher Areinamo put the Mudcats on the board for the first time with a RBI single in the second. Sibrian then followed with a two-run single in the next at bat as Carolina jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Brown then doubled and scored during Carolina’s two run third, giving them a 5-0 advantage. Jace Avina also came across in the third thanks to a bases loaded walk issued to Sibrian. The Carolina lead went from 5-0 after the third to 6-0 in the fifth when Perez connected on his team leading 13th homer of the year.

Delmarva starter Harol Arias allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits over two and 2/3 innings while taking the loss. Arias (0-2) also walked four and struck out two.
