ZEBULON – Hendry Mendez delivered a walk-off single in the tenth while lifting the Carolina Mudcats, playing as Pescados de Carolina, to a 2-1 victory versus the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Thursday night at Five County Stadium. The game-winning hit was the second of the season for Mendez and was Carolina’s fifth walk-off win of the year.

The Mudcats (2-4, 36-36) originally trailed 1-0 through the fifth before Zack Raabe delivered a game-tying, two-out single off reliever Miguel Ullola in the sixth. Eduardo Garcia walked, stole second and scored on Raabe’s lone hit of the night in the sixth.
The game was tied at 1-1 after six, and remained that way as Ullola and Carolina reliever Jeferson Figueroa turned in dominant performances out of their respective bullpens. Ullola allowed just the one run, but suffered his first blown save. In all, Ullola pitched through four innings with a run, two hits, a walk and six strikeouts. Figueroa entered in the sixth and turned in four scoreless frames that saw him allow just one hit, walk two and strike out five.
Karlos Morales later worked the tenth for Carolina and earned the victory after holding Fayetteville without a run. Morales (2-3) finished the tenth with a strikeout of Joey Loperfido and with his inherited runner still at second.
Fayetteville (2-4, 33-38) turned to Jacob DeLabio for the tenth, but he would face just one batter as Mendez delivered the game winner against him to score Jheremy Vargas from second. Vargas was the inserted runner that had originally come into the game to play third in place of pinch-hitter Jose Sibrian in the tenth. Sibrian hit for Luis Silva in the ninth.
The Woodpeckers scored first in the game with Cody Orr walking and scoring on a double steal in the third. That lone run would be all that Fayetteville would score against starter Miguel Segura and in the game. Segura worked through five full innings and totaled five strikeouts against four walks. He allowed the lone third inning run and scattered two hits in his solid outing.
Carolina took a 2-1 lead in the six-game series with the Thursday night victory. The series will continue on Friday night with game four and the first night of Carolina’s Mudcats for America post-game fireworks series of games at Five County Stadium.
