KINSTON, N.C. - Marcos Diplan struck out six and allowed just two runs over six innings, but Edgar Arredondo of the Wood Ducks pitched through seven scoreless frames while leading Down East to a 2-0 blanking of the Mudcats on Tuesday night at Grainger Stadium.

The Mudcats (18-20) were held to just one infield single over the seven innings pitched by Arredondo (4-1, 2.65) and were held to just three hits overall in the loss. Arredondo also struck out eight, walked three and won his third straight decision
The game was scoreless going into the sixth before Josh Altmann gave the Wood Ducks (21-17) the lead with a solo home run in to left. Diplan (1-2, 4.19) had worked through five scoreless frames before allowing Altmann's solo home run to start the sixth. He also gave up a two-out, run scoring double to Alex Kowalczyk later in the sixth as the Wood Ducks took a 2-0 lead late in the game.
The 2-0 lead was enough for Arredondo and relievers Anthony Gose and C.D. Pelham as they went on to preserve the shutout while holding Carolina without a run in the game.
Gose worked the eighth and pitched around a leadoff hit from Luis Aviles Jr. Jr. while keeping the Mudcats without a run. Pelham (S, 6) also allowed a hit, but struck out one while earning the save.
The Mudcats struck out 10 times in the loss and were held to just three hits. They also left just four men on base and went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position while losing for the fourth straight time overall at Grainger Stadium this season. The Wood Ducks improved to 4-0 versus the Mudcats in Kinston and 5-2 versus Carolina overall this season.
Nattino Diplan pitched the final two innings for the Mudcats and ended up with two strikeouts, and a hit allowed over two scoreless innings. In the end, both Diplans ended up combining on eight strikeouts and did not issue a walk in the game.
The series will continue on Wednesday night in Kinston at Grainger Stadium with RHP Trey Supak (2-1, 1.85) starting for the Mudcats against RHP Jonathan Hernández (3-2, 2.10) and the Wood Ducks.
