KINSTON, N.C. – A first inning throwing error by third baseman Luke Adams helped open the door for two unearned runs in the opening frame in a 2-0 Carolina Mudcats loss to the Down East Wood Ducks in Wednesday night's series opener at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, N.C.
Carolina (34-33) starter Patricio Aquino struck out five over five full innings while suffering the tough luck loss. Aquino (L, 1-3) allowed just two first inning hits, the second of which being a Gleider Figuereo RBI single. Reliever Yujanyer Herrera finished the game with three scoreless innings with just one hit allowed.
Down East (40-25) pitchers, including starter Brayan Mendoza and relievers Wyatt Sprarks and Jacob Maton, combined on what ending up begin a two-hit shutout. Mendoza (W, 1-0) picked up the victory after going through five innings with just one hit allowed. Spark worked two scoreless and Maton (S, 2) pitched the final two inning with three strikeouts.
The game was played in just one hour and :44 minutes, making it the fastest nine-inning game of Carolina’s season.
