De León dominated Eastern League opposition in his final month before earning promotion to Triple-A Norfolk. The left-hander made four starts for Chesapeake, going 3-0 in his decisions and allowing just two runs in 24 and two-thirds innings – good for a 0.73 ERA. De León allowed just 13 hits and walked just seven, compared to 28 strikeouts. Opponents hit .148 against the southpaw during his action with the Baysox last month.
De León struck out a Double-A-best nine batters twice last month. He began his July with five and two-thirds of one-hit, shutout ball in Binghamton against the Rumble Ponies on July 5, with one of his two nine-strikeout performances. He followed that up with a career-high eight, two-hit shutout innings in Akron against the RubberDucks on July 11. De León did not allow his first hit against Akron until there were two outs in the seventh inning. He gathered 14 of his 24 outs via the ground ball and was awarded Eastern League Pitcher of the Week the following Monday.
De León finished four and two-thirds frames and allowed one run while striking out five in his start at Prince George’s Stadium against the Hartford Yard Goats on July 19. He capped off his Double-A career with one run allowed in six and one-third innings pitched and nine punchouts at home against the Erie on July 26.
De León led the Eastern League in average against and ERA last month. His ERA last month was third-best of any minor league pitcher with at least 20 innings of work. He finished the month by earning promotion to Triple-A Norfolk on July 28.
The Baysox continue their seven-game home series against the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, with a doubleheader on Wednesday night. Game one is scheduled to begin at 5:35 pm from Prince George’s Stadium, with game two to follow shortly after. Both contests will be seven innings in length.
