ALTOONA, PA –** Doubleheaders continue to puzzle the Bowie Baysox in 2023, as they were swept in a twin bill for the second time this season, dropping a pair of one-run contests to the Altoona Curve on Wednesday, 3-2 in game one, and 1-0 in game two. Jud Fabian blasted his first Double-A home run in the front end of the night, while Connor Gillispie worked around a leadoff home run to retire 18-consecutive batters in the second game.

Bowie snagged an early lead in game one, as Tim Susnara laced a two-out double to right-center field to score one run, while another potential run was thrown out at home plate.

The lead lasted into the third inning, when Cade Povich had a tough start to his second turn through the batting order. Povich (L, 5-6) allowed five-consecutive baserunners to start the third, including a two-run single by Lolo Sanchez and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Gonzalez. Cleaning up what remained of the first game, Tyler Burch faced just one batter over the minimum in a season-long 3.1 innings of work.

Altoona was able to lean on strong bullpen work over the course of the night, as Justin Meis (W, 2-3) was the only reliever to allow a run. Jud Fabian brought Bowie within a run in the sixth inning with his first Double-A home run, but Tyler Samaniego (Sv, 4) retired three quick batters in the seventh inning to secure the first game for Altoona.

The second game saw one quick swing tell the entire tale, as Liover Peguero opened the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run, his ninth of the season. While it was a sour opening for Connor Gillispie, it was a sweet ride, and a bittersweet finish, as Gillispie (L, 2-2) retired every other batter he saw through a career-high tying six innings of work.

Despite the near-perfect outing from Gillispie, the Bowie offense did not manage a run against three Altoona pitchers. Stranding seven runners on base against Nick Dombkowski, Omar Cruz (W, 1-1), and Oliver Garcia (Sv, 4) held Bowie to just three hits and four walks. Bowie did not push a runner to third base in their third shutout loss of the season.

Bowie has fallen to just 1-5 in games played during a doubleheader, and 28-37 on the season. With just four games left in the first half, Bowie will try to tie the seven-game set with Altoona on Thursday, with the first pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
