FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 24, 2017) - The Fort Myers Miracle, Advanced-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, are proud to announce that the 2017 Professional Scouts Hall of Fame Inductee will be Larry Corrigan. A 15-minute ceremony is set for 5:10 pm inside Gate 2 at Historic Hammond Stadium on Saturday, August 26 before Fort Myers' game against the Charlotte Stone Crabs, Advanced-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
"Larry Corrigan dedicated his life to helping make the great game of baseball better," said Miracle Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ben Hemmen. "His passion and love for the game comes through from the moment you meet him and we are honored that his plaque will be on display at Hammond Stadium for future baseball generations to see when they come to a game."
Larry began his baseball playing days at Iowa State where he was a three-time All-Big 8 player, a three-time All-American and a two-time Big 8 Champion. In 1972, Larry was drafted by the LA Dodgers and played six seasons with the Dodgers and Minnesota Twins in their Minor League Systems as a pitcher and catcher. After his playing days, Corrigan moved to coaching at Iowa State from '79 to '84, the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in '84, Cal State Fullerton from '85 to '86 and the Fairbanks Goldpanners in '86. He also served our country as a member of the United States Army Reserve.
In 1987, Larry began scouting for the Oakland A's as an area scout which paid dividends when he caught on the next year with the Minnesota Twins. He climbed the Twins' ranks as a West Coast Scouting Supervisor, Scouting Director, Minor League Field Coordinator and, eventually, a Special Assignment Scout over the next two decades (1988-2005), a time that saw the Twins capture four divisional titles. From 2006-2009, Corrigan served as a Special Assignment Scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates. After a brief stint with the Angels in 2010, he realized it was time to get back to some 'Home Cooking' and rejoined his beloved Twins as a Professional Scout. Over Larry's life work, he has helped draft many great players including 1st Round Pick
"He's a guy that taught me to throw," stated Hunter. "(He) taught me in batting practice to hit no foul balls down the left-field line or the right-field line just keep all of your balls in play. He's done a lot of things that when you're young you're like, 'What is he doing?' But when you get older, you need it. I knew that when I was 17 and 18, but now I realize this man has actually developed me."
Larry Corrigan is a member of the Iowa State Hall of Fame and was Midwest Scout of the Year in 2016. On May 3, 2016, he suffered a stroke and now resides full time in Fort Myers, Florida.
The Professional Scouts Hall of Fame is presented by Killebrew Root Beer. It currently has twelve members, and Corrigan will make it thirteen. Others on the wall include Terry Ryan of the Minnesota Twins, former Marlins GM Dan Jennings, Jorge Posada Sr. and last year's inductee Tim Wilken. Also a part of Saturday's game, the first 500 fans at the ballpark will receive a clipboard sponsored by Killebrew Root Beer. Each clipboard has instructions to help fans keep score at a game like the professional scouts do from their seats behind home plate.
