Stone Crabs blank Miracle, 4-0, in series finale

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (April 12, 2015) - The Charlotte Stone Crabs pitching staff combined to shutout the Fort Myers Miracle at Charlotte Sports Park for the second time this season with a 4-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

Stone Crab starter Jacob Faria fanned seven Miracle hitters in six scoreless frames while allowing just four hit and issuing just one walk. Jeff Ames pitched a pair blank frames in the seventh and eighth. Nick Sawyer recorded the final three outs in order in a non-save situation in the ninth.

Charlotte pushed across a run in the second inning against Miracle starter Ethan Mildren. Maxx Tissenbaum led off with a single to left and moved up to second after a Niko Goodrum made a diving stop to retire Marty Gantt. Mike Marjama then singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. Braxton Lee hit a chopper to second base. Vavra charged and threw out Lee, but Tissenbaum crossed home plate, 1-0.

Charlotte added to the lead in the fifth against Mildren (0-1). Marjama led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a ground out to short from Lee. Andrew Velazquez then stroked a single into right on a 1-0 pitch to bring in Marjama and give the Crabs a 2-0 lead.

In the eight, the Stone Crabs added a pair of insurance runs off Miracle reliever Brian Gilbert. Velazquez singled through the right side to start the inning, then advanced to second on a base hit by Juniel Querecuto. Gilbert got Willy Adames to roll into a 4-6-3 double play, but allowed a two-out RBI double to Jake Bauers. Joey Rickard followed with a run-scoring single to extend the Stone Crab lead to 4-0.

Faria (1-0) earned the victory for Charlotte. Alex Muren tossed two scoreless frames out of the Miracle pen.

The Miracle have now gone 18 innings without scoring a run at Charlotte Sports Park. Niko Goodrum recorded his third multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Fort Myers (2-2) begins a four-game split series with the Tampa Yankees on Monday evening at Steinbrenner Field. The Miracle will play the second game of the series Wednesday morning in Tampa, then return to begin a five-game homestand at Hammond Stadium with a pair of games against the Yankees on April 15 and April 16.
