FORT MYERS, Fla. - Jonathan Loaisiga pitched five scoreless innings to lead the Tampa Tarpons to a 4-0 win over the Fort Myers Miracle Friday Night at Hammond Stadium.
The Nicaragua native was in command from the game's first pitch, retiring the first six batters he faced before a third inning single by Taylor Grzelakowski. Loaisiga (2-0) struck out five and did not walk a batter for the second straight start.
Scoreless in the fifth, the Tarpons (4-5) broke the tie on an Angel Aguilar single to left. The Tarpons tacked on another run in the sixth on a Francisco Diaz single before adding two more runs in the seventh on an Isiah Gilliam single and a Brandon Wagner sacrifice fly.
The Miracle (5-4) had their best chance of the night in the fourth inning. With the game scoreless, Mitchell Kranson doubled to left when Pablo Olivares lost the ball in the lights. But Jimmy Kerrigan struck out and Lewin Diaz flew out to end the threat.
Miracle Left-hander Charlie Barnes (0-2) went 4.2 innings. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out five. Hector Lujan followed the southpaw and allowed three runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work. Andrew Vasquez pitched the game's final two innings and did not allow a run.
The three-game series continues tomorrow night in Fort Myers. The Tarpons will send Michael King (0-0, 1.42) to the mound, while the Miracle counter with Phil Hughes (1-0, 5.40). Hughes will be making his second rehab start, as he works his way back from a left oblique strain. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
