Portland broke the game open, by scoring five runs in the sixth inning. The big blow came off the bat of Joseph Monge, who greeted reliever Steve Ascher with a three-run double to right field. Ascher had relieved starter Ryan Carpenter who had allowed a two-run double to Nick Longhi earlier in the inning.
The Sea Dogs scored the only run they needed in the fourth inning, when the Red Sox number two ranked prospect Rafael Devers homered off the top of the center field wall.
The Yard Goats managed just four hits by Max White, Collin Ferguson, Luis Jean and Josh Fuentes.
Game two of the series is Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. LH Jack Wynkoop will pitch for the Yard Goats against RH Jacob Dahlstrand for Portland. The game can be heard on AM 1410 and iHeartradio.
