HARTFORD- Franklin Kilome pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-run baseball, belted two doubles, knocked in a run and scored a run to lift the Reading Fightin Phils to a 6-3 win over the Hartford Yard Goats Monday night, before 5,836 at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Kilome, a member of the Philadelphia Phillies 40-man roster, allowed Hartford (45-47) two runs on six hits. The right hander walked three and struck out five, as he beat the Yard Goats for the second time in two weeks and pulled Reading (44-49) to within 1 1/2 games of third place Hartford.
The Yard Goats overcame an early 1-0 deficit on a run-scoring single by Brandon Bednar in the second inning and an RBI-double by Sam Hilliard in the third inning. But Reading bounced back to take the lead for good on a two-run homer to left by Jan Hernandez in the fourth inning. It was his 11th home run of the season and his fourth off of Hartford pitching.
Kilome helped his own cause with a double and run scored in the fifth, then added an RBI-double in the sixth inning. The Yard Goats closed out the scoring with a run-scoring single by Bednar in the ninth inning off of Seth McGarry, who pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to record his fourth save.
Hartford starter Sean Nolin, normally a reliever, pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out two. Heath Holder, called up earlier in the day from Advanced-A ball Lancaster, absorbed the loss in his Eastern League debut, permitting two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Brian Mundell led the Yard Goats offense with a single, double and triple. Bednar added three hits and two RBI. Kilome's two doubles and RBI and home runs by Deivi Grullon and Hernandez paced Reading.
Game two of the three-game series is Tuesday night at 7:05. RHP Frank Duncan will pitch for the Yard Goats against RHP Tyler Viza for Reading. The game will be televised on Vantage Sportsnet, broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio1410.iheart.com and MiLB.com.
