CORPUS CHRISTI - Houston Astros Day in the Sparkling City by the Sea was proclaimed by Mayor Joe McComb at the beginning of Tuesday's weekly city council meeting.

McComb, joined by council members Rudy Garza (District 5), Paulette Guajardo (at-large), Michael Hunter (at-large), Debbie Lindsey-Opel (at-large), Ben Molina (District 2), Lucy Rubio (District 3), Greg Smith (District 4), and Carolyn Vaughn (District 1), welcomed Hooks president Ken Schrom and 20 other front-office members to the proceedings.
"It was so gracious of the mayor and city council to acknowledge and underscore the impact of the Astros' first world title and the decades-long connection between fans in Corpus Christi, the Coastal Bend, and the Astros," Schrom said. "The relationship between the Astros and Corpus Christi is stronger than ever. Our fans have had the opportunity to cheer for and follow prominent young players as they rose through the Houston player development system … exceptional talents like José Altuve, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, George Springer, Dallas Keuchel… the list goes on and on."
The Astros, who have a Whataburger Field lease agreement with the city through 2034, captured their first world championship last Wednesday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

City of Corpus Christi
Proclamation
WHEREAS, The City of Corpus Christi is pleased to recognize the MLB World Champion Houston Astros, who defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. The Astros, who began play in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45s, capped their 56th season with the state of Texas' first Major League Baseball championship; and as the Astros captured the American League West Division crown with a regular-season record of 101 victories and 61 losses, 21 games ahead of the division runner-up Los Angeles Angels, and defeated the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series, three games to one, and eliminated the New York Yankees, winners of 27 world championships and 40 American League pennants, four games to three in the American League Championship Series; and
WHEREAS, A total of 10 former Corpus Christi Hooks who rose through the Astros player development system - Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, Chris Devenski, Derek Fisher, Yuli Gurriel, Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers, Jr., Joe Musgrove, and George Springer - were teammates on the Houston World Series roster and realized ultimate success on baseball's biggest stage; and another five members of the Astros World Series roster - Evan Gattis, Will Harris, Collin McHugh, Charlie Morton, and Brad Peacock - have seen action as members of the Hooks while on rehabilitation assignments; and
WHEREAS, Center fielder and lead-off hitter Springer earned World Series Most Valuable Player honors by batting .379 and establishing series records with 29 total bases and home runs in four consecutive games; and because Springer tied Reggie Jackson of the 1977 Yankees and Chase Utley of the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies with five home runs in a single World Series; and
WHEREAS, For 56 Major League seasons, 43 of them before the advent of the Hooks, Corpus Christi has consistently and passionately supported the Colt .45s and Astros teams; and because the Hooks, who play at beautiful Whataburger Field as the Double-A, Texas League affiliate of the Astros, have been owned by their parent club since 2014. The Astros and Hooks have provided incalculable value to the quality of life in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend, rallying our communities during good times and adverse circumstances.
Now, therefore, by the powers vested in me as the Mayor of the City of Corpus Christi, I do hereby proclaim,
November 7, 2017
