Knowles’ Monster Game Paces Sixers in 7-5 Win Over Modesto

Modesto, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino got a four-hit, five-RBI night from D’Shawn Knowles leading them to a 7-5 win over Modesto at John Thurman Field on Saturday. The victory was the Sixers’ third straight over the Nuts who had taken the first two games of the series.

Inland Empire (53-51) took a 2-0 lead in the third against Modesto starter Sam Carlson (5-4) on an RBI single from Arol Vera and one from Knowles. The Nuts (58-49) answered back in the home half with a game-tying two-run double from Robert Perez Jr against IE starter Brett Kerry. The runs were the first allowed by the righty as a professional in his fourth outing. Andrew Peters relieved Kerry with two on and two out in the third and stranded the runners to maintain the tie. The Sixers retook a 3-2 lead in the fourth on Alexander Ramirez’s RBI single versus Carlson. Peters (1-1) tossed a perfect fourth and was credited with his first professional win. The game remained 3-2 until the sixth when Knowles drilled a bases-clearing rocket to right on the first pitch reliever Juan Mercedes threw for a three-run double and a 6-2 advantage. Modesto made it 6-3 in the eighth on Alberto Rodriguez’ sac fly to left. Knowles got back into the act and got the run back in the top of the ninth when he drilled a solo shot to right, for his fourth hit of the game and fifth RBI of the game. The longball was Knowles’ fifth of the season. In the bottom of the ninth, Perez crushed a two-run homer to center, his 13th of the year, making it 7-5. Sixers’ righty Ryan Costeiu got the next two batters but James Parker doubled to right and Inland Empire turned to closer Emilker Guzman. The righty got Ty Duvall to hit a sinking liner to center. Cade Cabbiness, who had just moved to center from left following an injury to Bryce Teodosio, charged in and made an incredible diving catch to secure the game and Guzman’s 12th save of the year.
