LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - The Lancaster JetHawks held off a late Lake Elsinore Storm rally to pick up a 6-5 win on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
Helmis Rodriguez struck out Javier Guerra with the bases loaded to end the ballgame and earn himself his first save of the season. The JetHawks (11-9, 49-41) had led 6-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the Storm (8-12, 43-47) rallied for three runs on three hits and three walks against J.D. Hammer.
Lancaster had dominated the early innings of the contest, taking a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
Garrett Hampson got the scoring started in the third inning when he followed a two-out Wilson Soriano base-hit with a run-scoring double.
In the next inning, Hamlet Marte blasted a three-run home run, his seventh of the season, to put the JetHawks up, 4-0.
The runs were plenty for starter Peter Lambert (8-7). The right-hander tossed six scoreless frames and allowed six hits with out issuing a walk. He struck out three.
Alexander Guillen tossed a scoreless seventh inning but gave up solo homers to Rod Boykin and Kyle Overstreet in the eighth.
Lancaster got important insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Chris Rabago drove home a run with a triple and Roberto Ramos doubled and scored on Sam Hilliard's third hit of the game in the ninth.
Jesse Scholtens (3-5) took the loss for Lake Elsinore.
The series continues on Thursday night at The Diamond. Trey Killian (6-4) will take the ball for Lancaster against Adrian De Horta (1-0). First pitch is 7 p.m.
