KNOXVILLE, TN - The nine-game homestand rolls on at Covenant Health Park — and with it comes a fresh test for the Knoxville Smokies as they welcome the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. With the calendar just turning to April, both clubs understand what’s at stake early: a strong start can set the tone for the entire first half, where only the division winner punches an automatic ticket to the Southern League postseason.

Knoxville enters the series looking to rebound after dropping two of three to Birmingham on opening weekend, but history suggests an opportunity ahead. A season ago, the Smokies found more success against Rocket City than any other Southern League opponent — a trend they’ll aim to carry into 2026. Meanwhile, the Trash Pandas arrive with early momentum after a 2-1 start, eager to build traction and prove they belong in the early conversation in the North division.

First pitch of the series is set for 7:00 PM ET Tuesday night at Covenant Health Park.

The Smokies are off to a strong start in 2026, hitting .270 as a team (4th in the Southern League) with 27 hits and 17 walks, while continuing to manufacture runs with six stolen bases despite limited early power. They’ll lean on the veteran presence of outfielder Jordan Nwogu, who hit .300 with 18 RBIs against Rocket City last season, along with Cubs No. 20 prospect Ariel Armas, who has already made his mark on the Southern League leaderboard with a 1.270 OPS. With speed throughout the lineup, manager Lance Rymel has plenty of weapons to keep the offense moving and the pressure on opposing defenses all series long.

On the mound, Knoxville has shown swing-and-miss ability with 33 strikeouts (2nd) and just 28 hits allowed, though command will be key as the staff works to lower its 7.00 ERA. Several familiar names could play a major role in this series against Rocket City, including RHP Tyler Schlaffer, who went 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA against the Trash Pandas last season, and LHP Evan Taylor who did not allow a run across 7.2 innings in relief.

The Trash Pandas arrive in Knoxville looking to build on a strong opening weekend. Offensively, Rocket City will lean on outfielder Ben Gobbel, who was a steady presence against the Smokies last season, batting .271 while racking up 29 total bases in the season series. Panda baserunners have matched the Smokies, going six for six on stolen base attempts, but are currently batting under .200 as a team.

On the mound, Rocket City brings in a group that has allowed eight home runs, the most of any Southern League team. They’ll lean on the experience of RHP Joel Hurtado, who was dominant in three starts against the Smokies last season, posting a 0.75 ERA while allowing just one run over 12.0 innings. RHP Bryce Osmond is slated to make two starts after facing Knoxville once last season. With proven success against this lineup and an opportunity to set the tone early, Rocket City’s pitching staff could play a pivotal role in this series.

With six games on deck and familiarity on both sides, this series sets up as an early measuring stick in the Southern League North. The Smokies will look to lean on their speed, timely hitting, and swing-and-miss stuff on the mound to regain momentum, while Rocket City arrives eager to prove its opening weekend was no fluke. If Knoxville can capitalize on past success against the Trash Pandas and tighten things up on the mound, they have a strong opportunity to turn this homestand into a springboard as the season begins to take shape.
