KNOXVILLE, TN — If this series proved anything, it’s that this Smokies team is never out of a game. Time and time again, Knoxville found itself trailing late—only to respond with clutch hits, explosive innings, and walk-off magic that brought Covenant Health Park to life. From an eight-run inning in the opener to multiple ninth-inning rallies and comeback wins, this was a week defined by resilience, energy, and big-time moments when it mattered most.

Game 1: Smokies Second Inning Saves Free Beer Night

The Knoxville Smokies came out swinging in the series opener Tuesday night at Covenant Health Park, setting the tone early with a two-run first inning capped by Edgar Alvarez’s first Double-A home run. Rocket City answered right back in the second, using a two-run blast from Mac McCroskey to briefly take the lead, but that would be the last time the momentum leaned their way.

Knoxville responded with a game-changing surge in the bottom half of the second, erupting for eight runs on seven hits and flipping the game on its head. Karson Simas delivered the biggest blow with a two-run homer, part of an inning that saw the Smokies send 12 batters to the plate. The lineup kept the pressure on over the next two innings, adding four more runs to create plenty of separation.

Rocket City managed to chip in a couple of late runs, but the early offensive explosion proved more than enough. The Smokies cruised to a 14–6 victory, securing their largest win of the season and opening the series in emphatic fashion.

Game 2: Armas Ends It In Style

The Knoxville Smokies delivered their most dramatic moment of the young 2026 season on Wednesday afternoon at Covenant Health Park. Rocket City controlled much of the game, building a 7–4 lead through the middle innings, but Knoxville refused to fade. The Smokies chipped away behind timely hitting, highlighted by a strong performance from Alex Ramirez, whose multiple RBIs kept the offense within striking distance.

Trailing late, Knoxville set the stage for ninth-inning magic. With one out, Edgar Alvarez drew a walk, and Jordan Nwogu followed with a single to put the winning run on base. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, leading Rocket City to intentionally walk Carter Trice and load the bases in hopes of turning a game-ending double play.

Instead, Ariel Armas delivered the final blow. After entering earlier as a pinch hitter, Armas came through in the biggest moment, lining a two-run single into center field to complete the comeback and give the Smokies their first walk-off win of the season, an 8–7 victory in a back-and-forth thriller.

Game 3: Rojas’ Oppo-Taco Seals It For Knox Vegas

The Knoxville Smokies staged another thrilling comeback Thursday night at Covenant Health Park, rallying past Rocket City after falling behind early. On the season’s first “Knox Vegas” night, the Smokies embraced a gambler’s mentality—down early, but never out. The Trash Pandas jumped out to a 5–0 lead through the first three innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from Raudi Rodriguez.

Knoxville began to chip away in the middle innings, and in the sixth, Devin Ortiz delivered the turning point—ripping a bases-clearing double to cut the deficit to 7–3 and swing the momentum back in the Smokies’ favor.

The Smokies weren’t done. In the eighth, Ortiz sparked the rally again with another RBI knock before Alex Ramirez lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Knoxville even closer. Then came the knockout punch—Jefferson Rojas launched a three-run opposite-field homer into the Modelo Watering Hole, giving the Smokies their first lead of the night at 8–7.

The five-run eighth sealed Knoxville’s fourth comeback win of the season, a testament to their relentless offense and ability to deliver in big moments. The victory also set the stage for the Smokies to lock up a winning series heading into Friday.

Game 4: Smokies Rally Falls Short

Knoxville was dealt a tough blow early, as the starting pitcher exited with an injury in the first inning. Rocket City took full advantage, jumping out to a 6–0 lead through four innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from Gustavo Campero.

The Smokies responded in the fifth, breaking through against Angels Top 30 prospect Joel Hurtado. A five-hit inning sparked a four-run rally, with RBIs from Alex Madera, Alex Ramirez, and Jefferson Rojas to cut into the deficit. Out of the bullpen, Yenrri Rojas provided much-needed stability, tossing four strong innings to keep Knoxville within striking distance.

Knoxville battled back to within one run late, but ran out of pitching options in the eighth, turning to infielder Alex Madera for his first mound appearance since high school. Rocket City capitalized and added insurance, handing the Smokies a 9–6 loss. Despite the defeat, the offense showed resilience, but the early hole proved too much to overcome

Game 5: Ortiz Walk-Off Caps Ninth-Inning Magic

Knoxville trailed late in the game for the eighth consecutive time, but a ninth inning rally led to the Smokies second walk-off win of the series.

Game five of the series began as an all-out pitching duel with both starters going five scoreless frames. The Smokies eventually broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth when they loaded up the bases and drove in Devin Ortiz on an RBI groundout to make it 1-0.

Rocket City finally got on the board in the top of the eighth when Elijah Dunham tripled on a line drive to left fielder Jordan Nwogu, scoring Ben Gobbel to tie the game. Two batters later, Mac McCroskey blasted his second homerun of the series on a fly ball to left center field, making it 3-1 Trash Pandas.

Knoxville’s Ortiz made it a one run game in the eighth inning with a solo homerun to left field. In the bottom of the ninth, Karson Simas singled

on a ground ball to center field, scoring Nwogu to tie the game at three. With the game winning run at third, Ortiz lofted a sacrifice fly to center fielder Matthew Lugo, with Alex Madera scoring from third to walk-off the Trash Pandas by a final score of 4-3.

Game 6: Smokies Battle to the End

The Knoxville Smokies dropped the series finale to the Rocket City Trash Pandas on Sunday afternoon, falling 7–4 in a 10-inning battle at Covenant Health Park. It was a tightly played game early, with both pitching staffs settling in before Knoxville broke through in the fifth inning on Devin Ortiz’s second home run of the season to take a 1–0 lead.

Rocket City, however, had the answer late. The Trash Pandas took the lead in the top of the 8th inning. Trailing by one run in the bottom of the ninth, Haydn McGeary drove an RBI double off the center field wall. In the 10th, Rocket City took control with a string of clutch at-bats, highlighted by RBI knocks from Raudi Rodriguez and Ben Gobbel to push across three runs and grab a 7–3 advantage. Knoxville ran out of pitching late, and needed to turn to infielder Alex Madera to close out the game for the second time in this series.

Knoxville showed fight in the bottom half of the inning, getting a run back on a sacrifice fly from Ariel Armas, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Despite the loss, the Smokies still secured the series win, taking four of six from Rocket City and continuing to build momentum early in the 2026 season.

Wrap Up

By the end of it, the Smokies took four of six and showed exactly the kind of fight that can carry a team through a long season. Now, Knoxville hits the road for a new challenge down in Pensacola, looking to keep that momentum rolling away from home. Pensacola hosts Knoxville while currently sitting at the bottom of the Southern League South division. After the trip, the Smokies return to Covenant Health Park for another big divisional matchup against Chattanooga—setting the stage for more meaningful baseball back at America’s Friendliest Ballpark.
