KNOXVILLE, TN — Opening weekend is in the books, and the first page of the Smokies’ 2026 season has officially been written. A three-game set with the Birmingham Barons, back-to-back Southern League champions, offered an early measuring stick for both clubs, with each side looking to start the year on the right note. Knoxville fed off the Opening Day buzz to grab the first win of the season, but Birmingham answered over the final two games to take the series.

Game 1: A Seiya Showcase

Fans packed the ballpark for Opening Day, and Chicago delivered a headline-worthy addition to kick off the season. Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki made his first appearance as a Knoxville Smokie, but it was Jefferson Rojas who ignited the crowd early, launching a three-run home run in the first inning. RBI contributions from Alex Ramirez and Suzuki extended the lead to 5–1, giving Knoxville firm control in the early stages.

Birmingham answered in the middle innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from catcher Calvin Harris in the fourth that trimmed the deficit. Following the blast, Smokies starter Zane Mills exited the game, and reliever Jace Beck later surrendered a go-ahead home run to White Sox top prospect Braden Montgomery, briefly swinging momentum in favor of the Barons.

Knoxville responded in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on a combination of patience and pressure. Two walks, two singles, and a pair of wild pitches led to three runs, restoring the Smokies’ lead at 8–6. From there, the bullpen took over. Connor Schultz delivered three scoreless innings across the sixth through eighth to stabilize the game, while Ariel Armas added an insurance run in the eighth. Left-hander Evan Taylor closed the door in the ninth, securing a 9–6 Opening Day victory for Knoxville.

Game 2: Seventh Inning Surge Spoils the Smokies

The Birmingham Barons and Knoxville Smokies continued their opening weekend series on Saturday night and Birmingham struck first, jumping out to a quick lead on a two-run home run from Ryan Galanie in the opening inning. Knoxville answered in the bottom half, as Edgar Alvarez delivered a two-out RBI single to score Jefferson Rojas and cut the deficit in half.

In the fifth inning, White Sox top prospect Braden Montgomery added on with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Jordan Sprinkle. The Smokies responded once again in the bottom of the frame, capitalizing on a wild pitch to keep the game within reach.

The turning point came in the seventh, when Caden Connor lined a two-RBI single into left field to create separation. Jeral Perez followed later in the inning with a double into the gap, scoring Connor and extending the lead. From there, the Barons held off the Smokies down the stretch, ultimately securing a 6–2 victory.

Game 3: Barons Crack it Open on Easter

The Smokies and Barons wrapped up their opening weekend series with a Sunday matchup that quickly tilted in Birmingham’s favor. After a quiet first inning, the Barons erupted in the second, capitalizing on timely hitting and defensive miscues to plate four runs. They followed it up with another crooked number in the third, highlighted by extra-base hits from Wilfred Veras, Calvin Harris, and Caden Connor, building a commanding early lead.

Knoxville showed flashes of life offensively, breaking through in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Nwogu that scored Seiya Suzuki. Karson Simas added a two-run homer in the fifth to provide a spark, and the Smokies continued to chip away late with RBI hits from Ariel Armas and Andy Garriola in the eighth. Despite the effort, the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Birmingham’s pitching staff did just enough to hold off any sustained comeback, stranding key Smokies opportunities while maintaining control throughout the middle innings. In the end, the Barons secured the series finale with a 10–5 win, taking two of three from Knoxville to open the 2026 season.

Wrap Up

Despite dropping two of three to open the season, the Smokies showed plenty of promise throughout the weekend, flashing an offense capable of putting up runs in bunches and a roster filled with impact talent. From Jefferson Rojas’ Opening Day spark to contributions from Ariel Armas, Carter Trice, and Karson Simas, Knoxville proved it has the pieces to compete with one of the Southern League’s top clubs. While the results didn’t fully go their way, the individual performances and overall fight offer plenty of optimism for the future. The Smokies will look to build on that momentum as they continue their opening homestand with a six-game series against the Rocket City Trash Pandas at Covenant Health Park from April 7–12.
