Captains Four-Run First Inning Holds Up in 4-2 Win

(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (25-33, 54-74) sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning which was all the offense needed to defeat the South Bend Cubs (25-33, 59-68) 4-2 on Wednesday night.
The Captains had four hits in the first inning, all singles, and used two hit-batters to spark the rally. Dane Hutcheon had his first of three singles, which plated two, and Jose Vicente also added an RBI.
South Bend scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning. With a runner on third and two outs, Clayton Daniel singled in the first run, and later came around to score on a Jose Gutiérrez base hit. After five innings the score was 4-2 Lake County and that score was held up to be the final.
Pitching was key for both teams. Juan Hillman , (5-12) earned the win after pitching six innings and allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. Hillman walked one and tied a season-high with nine strikeouts. Nick Gallagher twirled two scoreless innings and fanned four. Jonathan Teaney earned the save his seventh of the season.
Brandon Little (4-11) didn't survive the first inning. Little took the loss, and allowed four earned runs on four hits with two hit batters and one walk. The South Bend bullpen used three pitchers and twirled eight and one third innings in scoreless release.
The Cubs and Captains will play the rubber game of three game series on Thursday night beginning at 7:00 PM. Both teams are in the thick of the second half playoff push.
