MOBILE, Ala. (May 7, 2019) - Jason Alexander had a career night to lead the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Tuesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Alexander (1-0) faced just one over the minimum in a career-high eight-inning start. For the second straight night, the BayBears (14-17) retired 13 consecutive Jacksonville batters to open the game. Joe Dunand was the first to reach with a one-out single in the fifth, but Alexander continued to dominate by setting down the next 11 hitters. He also recorded a career-high in strikeouts, fanning nine.
Jahmai Jones provided the only offense with his first home run of the season off McKenzie Mills (1-5). In the bottom of the sixth with Jack Kruger on first, Jones belted a two-run homer to left-center field. He has driven in four runs with two extra-base hits in the first two games of the series.
The Jumbo Shrimp (10-22) threatened to score in the ninth with two hits and a walk against Kaleb Cowart . However, Cowart induced a double play and struck out Justin Twine with runners on the corners to end the game. It was the third shutout win of the season for Mobile and Cowart's first professional save.
The BayBears continue the 10-game homestand and five-game home series against Jacksonville Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Matt Ball (1-1, 2.74 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Robert Dugger (1-5, 4.88 ERA) for the Jumbo Shrimp.
