FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 16, 2017) - Chris Paul's walk-off three-run home run capped a wild night as the Fort Myers Miracle (19-20) took home a 5-2 win over the Clearwater Threshers (22-17) after a 70-minute rain delay.
Before the delay, RHP David Fischer took advantage of an early 2-0 lead by not allowing a hit through three innings. The Miracle used RBI-singles in the first from Zander Wiel and Alex Perez to jump in front. In the bottom of the third, the rain came pouring down and out came the tarp for a 70-minute delay.
Once the teams took the field again, Fischer was back out to pick up where he left off. His first hit allowed came in the fifth, and the Threshers quickly loaded the bases with two outs down a pair of runs. Herlis Rodriguez came through with a two-run single to tie the game, ending Fischer's night.
Relievers on both sides shut down the opposition until the bottom of the ninth. RHP Alex Muren and RHP Nick Anderson (W, 2-0) combined to toss the final 4.1 innings with just one hit between them. RHP Harold Arauz shined in his Florida State League debut, fanning six over 3.2 scoreless frames.
RHP Jared Waguespack (L, 0-2) worked smoothly through the seventh and eighth, but the ninth started with an error by Drew Stankiewicz at second base off a ground ball from Brian Navarreto. Sean Miller then sacrificed pinch-runner Daniel Kihle over with a bunt before the Threshers intentionally walked Max Murphy. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third in the 2-2 tie. Waguespack struck out Bradley Strong which brought up Paul with two outs. On the 1-0 pitch, Paul hit a bullet to left-center. The no-doubter cleared the fence and gave the Miracle the 5-2 win.
The two teams play game three of four on Wednesday night at 6:35 PM ET. Two lefties battle as LHP Lachlan Wells opposes LHP Cole Irvin on a Women's WINsday.
