FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 5, 2017) - Brent Rooker belted his first professional grand slam as the Fort Myers Miracle (26-16) took down the Jupiter Hammerheads (24-17) 10-4 on Saturday night. The win is Fort Myers' fourth straight and puts them 1.5 games up in the FSL South division.
Jupiter plated the first run of the game against starter RHP Randy LeBlanc. With runners at the corners and one out in the third, John Silviano sent a groundball to first. Mitchell Kranson came home with the throw, but Corey Bird slid in ahead of the tag.
The Miracle answered back in the bottom of the frame against starter RHP Cody Poteet (L, 3-4). After Tanner English reached with a leadoff walk, Jaylin Davis singled to right field on a hit and run. English got to third and, as the cutoff throw bounced away from everyone, came home to score the tying run. David later came in on a wild pitch. With runners at second and third, Kranson stepped up with two outs to deliver the two-RBI single to put the Miracle up 4-1.
In the top of the fifth, Davis cut down Bird at the plate trying to score from second on a Colby Lusignan single. He then led off the bottom of the fifth with a single of his own and later scored on a Jermaine Palacios two-out infield hit. Two batters later, Rooker jumped in with the bases loaded. His opposite field shot continued to carry until it left the yard, his first grand slam for the Twins organization. Poteet was tagged for nine runs, all earned, in his loss.
Fort Myers added one more tally with a two-out Brandon Lopez RBI-single in the sixth to score Davis for the third time. The Miracle were outhit 13 to 10 as 20 of the 23 hits in the game were singles.
The bullpen duo of LHP Anthony McIver (W, 4-2) and RHP Keaton Steele blanked the Hammerheads for innings four through eight. LHP Alex Robinson allowed three meaningless runs in the ninth to provide the 10-4 final.
The Miracle look for the series sweep of Jupiter on Sunday morning with an 11:05 AM ET brunch with the Miracle day. RHP Sean Poppen opposes RHP Pablo López of the Hammerheads.
