Dodd Logs Quality Start, Late Comeback Comes Up Short in 5-3 Loss to Shuckers

PEARL, MS - LHP Dylan Dodd went six strong innings, but the Mississippi Braves (47-54, 18-14) fell to the Biloxi Shuckers (50-49, 16-16) 5-3 in front of a crowd of 5,085 on Saturday night at Trustmark Park.

Dodd allowed two runs over sixth in his fourth Double-A start. The left-hander struck out six to just one walk. In four starts for the M-Braves, Dodd has a 4.35 ERA in 20 2/3 innings with 24 strikeouts to six walks. He is currently ranked as Atlanta’s No. 19 prospect.

Landon Stephens chopped a grounder to center field for his first Double-A hit in the second. Stephens was promoted from High-A Rome on Friday, August 5 where he hit .224 with 19 home runs and 70 RBI in 88 games.

The Shuckers scored first in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Cam Devanney to make it 1-0. Biloxi added another on an RBI double from Corey Ray in the fifth to lead 2-0.

Hendrik Clementina doubled to the gap in right center to lead off the sixth. Cody Milligan smoked a grounder off the second baseman and into right field to score Clementina and make it 2-1.

Biloxi scored two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to lead 5-1 heading into the final inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Vaughn Grissom led off with a grounder for a base hit through the left side of the infield. Back-to-back walks then loaded the bases with no outs. Stephens brought in a run on a fielder’s choice groundout, and a wild pitch scored a second run to make it 5-3.

Biloxi made a pitching change. RHP Cam Robinson, the MiLB leader with 22 saves, came in and retired the final two batters for his third save with the Shuckers.

Grissom went 2-for-4 for his seventh multi-hit effort in 20 games since his promotion. Atlanta’s No. 1 prospect is batting .354 with two home runs and 11 RBI.

The series finale is on Sunday at Trustmark Park. A starter to be announced will make the start for Mississippi against RHP Victor Castaneda (1-5, 4.16) for Biloxi. The first pitch is at 2:05 pm CT, with coverage starting at 1:50 pm CT on 103.9 WYAB, First Pitch App and MiLB.tv.
