PEARL—The Mississippi Braves and Farm Bureau are proud to announce that INF Nacho Alvarez Jr. and RHP JJ Niekro have been named Farm Bureau Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 5-14.

Alvarez Jr. celebrated his 21st birthday on April 11, and Atlanta's sixth-ranked prospect (MLB Pipeline) excelled in his first nine games at the Double-A level. The Fontana, CA native posted a .323/.462/.355 slash line with a double, two RBI, eight walks, and five stolen bases. Alvarez leads the Southern League in walks and ranks among the Southern League leaders in hits (T-4th, 10), on-base percentage (5th, .462), batting average (7th, .323), and stolen bases (T-5th, 5). Alvarez capped his week by going 3-for-5 with a run scored and two stolen bases in Sunday's series finale against Biloxi.

Alvarez was the Atlanta Braves' fifth-round selection in 2022 out of Riverside Community College (CA).

Niekro made his first two Double-A starts during the opening homestand and went 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA (2 ER/10.2), two walks, and eight strikeouts. Niekro got the win during the home opener on April 9 with 6.0 shutout innings in the 2-0 weather-shortened contest. The Plant City, FL native ranks among the Southern League leaders in innings pitched (3rd, 10.2), WHIP (6th, 0.84), ERA (7th, 1.69), and opponent's batting average (7th, .179).

The Braves signed Niekro as a non-drafted free agent in 2021 out of Florida Southern.
