Green Named 2014 SL Manager of the Year

MOBILE, AL -The Southern League and Mobile BayBears Professional Baseball club are pleased to announce that Mobile BayBears Manager, Andy Green has been named the 2014 Southern League Manager of the Year, as voted upon by the league's field managers, radio broadcasters and print media.

 

Green, a Lexington, Kentucky native is the eleventh manager in the history of the BayBears. He is the third BayBears manager to win Manager of the Year after Turner Ward in 2011 and Mike Ramsey in 1998. He was also selected as Manager of the Year in last season in 2013.

 

Green played 3 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks at second base, third base, short stop and left field. He was drafted by Arizona in the 24th round of the 2000 Amateur Draft after a record-breaking run at the University of Kentucky. In the minors, he hit over .300 in most of his seasons with the Diamondbacks.

 

In his second year managing the BayBears, Green led the team to capture the Southern League South Division title in the first half of the season and a possibility to take the second half, being 3.5 games back from the division leading Mississippi Braves. The BayBears have been extremely successful this season with an impressive overall record of 79-54, tying last years mark of 79 wins which stands as the third most victories in franchise history.

 

Green was given a talented team this year, including Southern League MVP, mid-season and post-season All-Star third baseman Jake Lamb. The team also included midseason All-Stars Jake Barrett (P), Blake Cooper (P) Jon Griffin (1B), Sean Jamieson (Utility IF) and post-season All-Star Tom Belza (OF). 

 

Lamb and Belza currently lead the team in batting with .318 and .309 batting averages, respectively. Mobile's overall batting average is .260 and the overall team ERA is 3.22 with 980 strikeouts. Green has also guided the team to lead the league in defense with a defensive percentage of .982.

 

The BayBears continue their five game series with Jacksonville for the final four games of the regular season before returning to Hank Aaron Stadium on September 4, for the start of the 2014 Southern League Playoffs.
