Modesto, CA. - Late offense and a grand slam help the Modesto Nuts end a five-game losing streak with a 6-5 win over the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.
The offense for the Nuts (7-13) started early when Logan Taylor lifted a first-inning grand slam against 66ers (10-11) starter Nate Bertness. The southpaw threw well after that however and did not allow another run in his 4 2/3 innings of work.
Randy Bell started for the Nuts and retired the first nine he faced. In the fourth, 66ers got to him for five runs on seven hits while sending ten to the plate. Kevin Williams Jr. homered in the inning and the 66ers collected five straight two-out hits.
The Nuts took the lead back in the seventh. After a single and a pair of walks to load the bases, Aaron Cox (L, 0-1) was taken out of the game for Zac Ryan. Joe Rizzo rolled a groundball up the middle that second baseman Jahmai Jones got to. His throw to first was late and wide allowing Rizzo to beat out the game-tying RBI infield hit. With the errant throw, Evan White came around to score the eventual winning run.
Bryson Brigman moved back into the top spot in the league in average after three hits and two runs. Evan White reached four times on three walks and a single. Joe Rizzo had two hits and took a walk.
Jeffeson Medina (W, 2-0) worked a pair of scoreless innings out of the Nuts' bullpen. Seth Elledge (S, 1/1) worked a perfect ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.
The Nuts open a three-game set with the Giants on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:50 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC by clicking HERE.
