Rancho Cucamonga, CA. - Four perfect innings from the bullpen followed five strong innings by Austin Hutchison to carry the Modesto Nuts to a 3-1 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Sunday afternoon at LoanMart Field.
The win snaps the Nuts' (34-61; 10-21) six-game losing streak.
Cristian Santana homered off Hutchison in the second inning to give the Quakes (59-42; 24-7) the first lead of the game. That was all the Quakes would get against Nuts pitching on Sunday afternoon.
Hutchison allowed just four total hits while working five innings with seven strikeouts including K's of the final four he faced.
The Nuts' offense tied the game in the fourth inning. Kevin Santa doubled before he stole third base. Santa scored the tying run when Louis Boyd brought him in with a RBI groundout, the first of his two RBI.
It was a mistake defensively that gave the Nuts the lead in the seventh against Quakes reliever Austin Hamilton (L, 1-2). Anthony Jimenez walked to start the inning. He stole second and moved to third on a groundout. With two outs, Joe Rizzo lifted a pop up to third that was dropped by Cristian Santana allowing Jimenez to stroll home. The Nuts added a run in the eighth on a Boyd RBI single.
Three Nuts relievers were perfect over the final four innings. Jeffeson Medina worked two frames with three strikeouts. J.T. Salter had a perfect eighth. Wyatt Mills (S, 10/13) shut the door with a perfect ninth inning.
