Modesto, CA. - Thanks to a strong pitching performance, the Modesto Nuts took the opener of a four-game series with a 3-1 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Friday night at John Thurman Field.
Darren McCaughan (W, 2-3) allowed just an unearned run in 5 1/3 innings while matching a career-high with seven strikeouts in his start for the Nuts (16-19). McCaughan had to work around eight hits and one error. The lone run scored against McCaughan was a RBI double off the bat of Taylor Kohlway in the second inning.
Michel Baez (L, 0-3) hung three hitless innings to begin his start for the Storm (13-22). In the fourth, Joe Rizzo recorded the first Nuts' hit with a single to start the inning. Logan Taylor walked to put runners at first and second. Nick Zammarelli hit a single to left that Taylor Kohlway had kick off his glove allowing Rizzo to score. On the throw back to the infield, Zammarelli was caught in a rundown allowing Taylor to score.
The Nuts' final run scored when Kevin Santa accepted a bases loaded walk in the sixth inning.
Michael Koval was sharp out of the bullpen worked 2 2/3 scoreless inning with five strikeouts.
Seth Elledge (4/4) was perfect in the ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.
