Lake Elsinore, CA. - A big fifth inning sent the Modesto Nuts to an 8-3 loss against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond.
The win snaps the Nuts' (14-17) four-game winning streak but they still finished the road trip 5-2.
In a one-run game, Randy Bell (L, 1-1) hit Buddy Reed to start the fifth. He then walked Eguy Rosario before a wild pitch moved Reed to third. Edward Olivares knocked Bell out of the game with a sac fly.
John Richy followed and hit the first batter he faced before surrendering a two-run double. Hudson Potts capped the five-run fifth with a two-run homer.
The Nuts tried to mount a comeback against the Storm (12-19) with a two-run single by Garrett Kennedy in the sixth. Logan Taylor also added a RBI groundout in the seventh but that was all from the Nuts' offense as they went 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left eleven runners on base.
Elliot Ashbeck (W, 1-2) worked two hitless innings out of the Storm bullpen to finish the game and keep the Nuts from completing the sweep.
After an off day on Monday, the Nuts start a three-game set with the San Jose Giants on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:50 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC by clicking HERE.
