Modesto, CA. - A big burst by the offense backed Darren McCaughan's career start to push the Modesto Nuts to a 12-1 win over the San Jose Giants on Tuesday night at John Thurman Field.
McCaughan (W, 3-3) struck out a career-high nine over six innings of work. The only run scored against the Nuts' (20-25) came in on Jacob Heyward's first-inning single. McCaughan stranded a double in the fourth and left the bases loaded in the fifth.
Evan White tied the game in the first inning with a solo home run to begin a run of 12 unanswered runs by the Nuts. Gareth Morgan gave the Nuts the lead with a titanic home run in the fourth, a three-run shot over the center field wall. The Nuts scored four runs on five hits off Giants (25-19) starter Raffi Vizcaino (L, 3-3).
The Nuts blew the game open in the sixth with eight runs, their most in a single inning this year. Tyler Baker doubled home a run. Kevin Santa drove in two with a single. White added his second RBI with a single. Kyle Lewis' second hit of the day was a single to knock reliever Jeff Burke out of the game after 2/3 of an inning. Nick Zammarelli smacked a RBI double and Luis Liberato capped the inning with an infield RBI single.
The Nuts' bullpen worked three scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Overall, the 16 strikeouts by the Nuts were a season high.
