Stockton, CA. - Three home runs sent the Modesto Nuts to a 7-4 loss against the Stockton Ports on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
In the ninth, the Nuts (23-30) mounted a rally. After singles by Joe Rizzo and Anthony Jimenez, Evan White extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run double. After a groundout, Kyle Lewis was hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate.
Miguel Romero (S, 11/12) entered the game to face Nick Zammarelli. Romero threw one pitch to Zammarelli who bounced out to the shortstop to end the game and give the Ports (32-21) a 2-to-1 advantage in the four-game series.
Reggie McClain (L, 2-3) started the game for the Nuts on an extremely windy night in Stockton. Skye Bolt lifted a fly ball to left in the first inning that the wind pushed out for a solo home run.
After Luis Liberato tied the game with a solo home run of his own in the fourth, Luke Persico smacked a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to give the Ports the lead for good. Bolt added a two-run shot in the fifth. McClain was done after five innings allowing five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Rizzo led the way offensively with four hits. He went 4-for-4 and fell a triple shy of the cycle.
Parker Dunshee (W, 4-2) worked into the seventh inning in his second straight start. The righty struck out seven and allowed just the two solo home runs.
The Nuts eye a series split on Thursday night in the four-game series finale. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC by clicking HERE.
