Modesto, CA. - The Modesto Nuts took advantage of three errors to beat the Lake Elsinore Storm 9-5 on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.
Hudson Potts drilled a two-run homer off Nuts (33-47; 3-7) starter Darren McCaughan (W, 4-5) in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the first, Bryson Brigman reached on an error to start the inning. Nick Zammarelli took advantage by smoking a two-run shot off Storm (36-44; 2-8) starter Reggie Lawson (L, 5-3).
Potts lifted his second two-run homer in the third inning to take the lead back for the Storm.
Things unraveled for the Storm in the fifth. With one out, Evan White walked. Brad Zunica misplayed a groundball off the bat of Zammarelli to put two on ahead of Kyle Lewis who smashed a RBI double off the wall. The next batter, Joe Rizzo, hit a groundball that Zunica misplayed allowing Zammarelli to score and Rizzo to reach first.
That knocked Lawson out of the game who worked 4 1/3 innings while giving up six runs, one earned, with seven strikeouts.
Steven Wilson checked in out of the Storm bullpen next. Wilson gave up back-to-back RBI singles to Luis Liberato and Anthony Jimenez. Nick Thurman lifted a sac fly. Bryson Brigman, in his second at-bat of the inning, drove home two runs with a single to cap the seven-run fifth. All seven runs were unearned.
McCaughan worked 6 2/3 innings for the Nuts and allowed five runs, four earned, with three strikeouts.
Jeffeson Medina and Wyatt Mills combined to work 2 1/3 perfect innings out of the bullpen.
