Modesto, CA. - Nick Wells led a terrific pitching performance from the Modesto Nuts' staff in a 3-1 win against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Friday night at John Thurman Field.
Wells (W, 1-1) retired the first eight he faced against the Storm (36-43; 2-7) in the opening game of a five-game series. After a two-out third-inning single, Wells retired the next nine batters in a row before a sixth-inning single.
The only run against Wells was an unearned tally as a result of a throwing error by third baseman Joe Rizzo.
Evan White started the scoring for the Nuts (32-47; 2-7). He blasted a home run in the first inning against Pedro Avila (L, 3-6). The Nuts knocked Avila out of the game in the sixth inning when they broke the tie. Kyle Lewis started the rally by doubling off the wall in center. Rizzo laced a single into left that was misplayed by Buddy Reed to allow Lewis to score. Luis Liberato knocked the Storm starter out of the game with a RBI single later in the inning.
Avila worked 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Anthony McIver tossed two perfect innings out of the Nuts' bullpen. Seth Elledge (S, 8/8) slammed the door shut in the ninth working around a bunt single.
Game two of this five-game series with the Storm is set for Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:50 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC by clicking HERE.
