Rancho Cucamonga, CA. - Late offense backed a gem from Darren McCaughan to give the Modesto Nuts an 8-7 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Monday night at LoanMart Field.
There was drama in the ninth with Wyatt Mills (S, 2/3) on the mound for the Nuts (10-15). With a four-run lead and the bases loaded for the Quakes (11-14). Omar Estevez lined a ball to center with two outs. Jorge Solano dove for the ball and it got by him. The first three runs scored. Estevez was waved to the plate to try for a game-tying, inside-the-park grand slam. The relay throw to the plate was so far ahead of Estevez that he tried to get back to third. Tyler Baker fired to third and Rizzo applied the tag to end the game and give the Nuts their fourth win in the last five games.
Darren McCaughan (W, 1-3) started the game for the Nuts and worked a career-high seven innings with a career-best seven strikeouts. He allowed a pair of sac flies in the second and third innings. In the seventh, he surrendered a RBI single and that was all.
The Nuts' offense finally got going in the sixth. Kevin Santa tied the game with a two-run single off Quakes reliever Justin Hoyt (L, 0-1). Tyler Baker followed with a two-run homer. Baker drove in four runs in the game.
Evan White homered in the seventh, he recorded three hits. Bryson Brigman recorded three hits to maintain the title as the league's leading hitter.
