MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Biscuits (59-55) battled some rain, but beat the Birmingham Barons (62-53), 6-3, in Tuesday night’s series opener at Riverwalk Stadium. The Biscuits are now two and a half games behind the Barons for the final playoff spot in the Double-A South with five games to play in the regular season.

Easton McGee (6-2) started on the hill for the Biscuits, and the right-hander worked a one-two-three top of the first, inducing a couple of groundouts and striking out one. Emilio Vargas (7-4) was on the other side for the Barons, and after retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the first, the righty walked Ford Proctor and then allowed a single to Ruben Cardenas. With runners at the corners, Cal Stevenson lined a two-run double into the right-center field alley in the next at-bat to make it 2-0 Biscuits early.

The Barons strung together three-straight singles to begin the second inning, the last of which scored a run off the bat of Yoelqui Cespedes to make it a 2-1 game. Vargas picked up his second strikeout in a one-two-three bottom of the second.

McGee allowed another single in the top of the third, but kept the Barons off the board. Vargas did the same in the bottom of the third, and the score remained 2-1. McGee worked a clean top of the fourth, and Vargas struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth, despite allowing a lead-off double to Connor Hollis.

McGee worked another one-two-three inning in the top of the fifth, and then Cardenas launched a three-run home run to left-center to increase the Biscuits lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Jameson Fisher responded with a two-run homer to right-center field off McGee to make it a 5-3 contest in the top of the sixth.

Chris Muller came on for McGee in the top of the seventh and allowed a single and a walk, but also struck out a pair in a scoreless frame. J.B. Olson, who induced four-consecutive groundouts between the sixth and seventh, sat the Biscuits down in order in the sixth and seventh, notching a couple punch-outs to end the seventh.

Justin Sterner came on for Muller in the top of the eighth and faced the minimum, preserving the 5-3 advantage. The Biscuits loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth against Olson, and Jim Haley delivered a sac fly to make it a 6-3 game. Sterner then closed things out for his second save in a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts.

The Biscuits will try to make it four-straight wins on Military Wednesday presented by WOW! when Miller Hogan (0-1) takes on Blake Battenfield (7-7) at 6:35 PM CT.
