JACKSONVILLE, Flo. - The Biscuits (32-25) won for the seventh time in nine games, defeating the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (24-33) for the second-straight night, 5-1, on Monday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Mike Franco (5-0) twirled one of his most impressive outings of the season going six innings of one-run ball, surrendering just four hits to go along with three walks and a career-high nine strikeouts. The Biscuits are now 10-1 in Franco starts this season.
Montgomery would get on the board first thanks to Cade Gotta's two-out RBI-double in the first inning off Jacksonville starter, Joe Gunkel (0-2). The game would remain 1-0 until Alex Yarbrough stepped up in the fourth and swatted a two-out double of his own to tie the game.
Genkel would retire 12-consecutive Biscuits between the second and fifth innings, but in the sixth, he would walk Riley Unroe, and then a single by Braxton Lee put runners at first and second with nobody out. That's when Southern League Player of the Week, Andrew Velazquez, climbed in and smoked an RBI-triple into the left-center field alley to give the Biscuits the lead for good.
Later in the same inning, Velazquez would score on a wild pitch to make it 4-1, and a Justin Williams RBI-single in the eighth tacked on the Biscuits final run of the night. Velazquez now has at least one RBI in six of his last seven games, and has raised his batting average almost 60 points over the last week.
Relievers Kyle Bird, Brad Schreiber, and Kyle Winkler each tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen as the Biscuits won their 32nd game of the season. Montgomery will aim to win their seventh series of the year in game three on Tuesday night when José Mujica (4-3) tangos with Matt Tomshaw (5-2) at 6:05 PM CT.
