SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds opened their series with the Lynchburg Hillcats by winning game one by a final of 7-3 on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
With the win, the Shorebirds (14-5) move into sole possession of first place over the Hillcats (13-6).
Lynchburg struck first blood in the top of the first inning. With one away, Micah Pries tripled into the right-center alley and was brought home on a Will Bartlett RBI groundout to put the Hillcats ahead 1-0.
Delmarva managed to tie the game in the second on the strength of a JD Mundy solo homer, his fourth of the season, knotting the game at 1-1.
The see-saw affair continued into the fourth when Lynchburg took the lead back. With one out, Yainer Diaz walked and then went first to third on a Johnathan Rodriguez single. Andres Melendez then lashed a double to right-center, scoring Diaz, to put Lynchburg ahead 2-1. With runners now at second and third, Thomas Girard came in out of the bullpen for Delmarva and escaped the jam without further damage.
In the fifth, Jordan Cannon began the frame with a single and Trevor Kehe sent him to third with a two-bagger. After a strikeout, Hudson Haskin singled through a drawn in infield to score Cannon and tie the game at 2-2. A wild pitch then allowed Kehe to score from third to put Delmarva ahead 3-2.
Lynchburg knotted the game up again in the sixth. With one out, Diaz singled to center. After a strikeout, he swiped second before an infield single from Melendez and a subsequent throwing error on the play allowed Diaz to score and even the score at 3-3.
A sixth inning rally put the game to bed for Delmarva. Mundy doubled with one out to jumpstart the rally and then moved to third on a Cristopher Cespedes infield single. A groundball off the bat of Cannon was then booted, allowing everyone to advance 90 feet and put Delmarva back in front 4-3. The very next pitch, Kehe ripped a two-run triple to right-center to pile it on. Mason Janvrin followed with an RBI single to left to put Delmarva ahead 7-3.
Shane Davis posted three consecutive zeros to finish the game for the Shorebirds and ice the 7-3 win.
Davis (2-0) secured the win for Delmarva. Davis went the final four innings, allowing just an unearned run on five hits while striking out five.
Jamie Arias (2-1) takes the loss for Lynchburg. Arias allowed four runs (three earned) over 2.1 innings on four hits while striking out three.
Both starters did not factor into the decision for their respective clubs. Xzavion Curry started for Lynchburg, going 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. Ryan Watson began the game on the mound for Delmarva and allowed two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings, walking one and striking out seven.
Kehe finished a homer shy of the cycle for Delmarva, going 3-for-4 with two driven in. Mundy also collected multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a homer and double. Haskin extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 1-for-4 performance, also adding an RBI. Janvrin went 1-for-2 with an RBI while adding three stolen bases.
Johnathan Rodriguez led the charge for Lynchburg, going 2-for-4 with a double while Melendez pitched in with a 2-for-4 game as well with an RBI double.
The Shorebirds and Hillcats are back in action on Wednesday, May 26 at Perdue Stadium. Xavier Moore (1-2, 2.70) makes his first start of the year for Delmarva while Daniel Espino (1-0, 2.70) goes for Lynchburg. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and MiLB.TV beginning at 6:50 with Sam Jellinek on the call.
