Sandlin Wins Carolina League Pitcher of the Week Honors

COLUMBIA, SC – The Columbia Fireflies, in conjunction with the Carolina League and Minor League Baseball, announced today that RHP David Sandlin has been named the Carolina League pitcher of the week for the week from June 6-12.

Sandlin started Friday, June 9 for Columbia and pitched a team-high seven scoreless innings while punching out nine Salem Red Sox in a Fireflies 1-0 win. The Fireflies selected the University of Oklahoma product in the 11th round of the 2022 draft.

This season, Sandlin is 4-1 with a 3.19 ERA and he paces the Carolina League with 75 strikeouts in 53.2 innings. He has spun 13 innings in his last two outings, whiffing 19 hitters. The righty is the first Fireflies player to win a Carolina League Pitcher of the Week award since Jonatan Bernal was named the recipient of the award September 5 of last season. Despite that, David Hollie has been named a Carolina League Player of the Week and Steven Zobac was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Month for April.

The Fireflies will head to Fayetteville to face the Woodpeckers Tuesday at 7:05 pm. Columbia will send RHP Steven Zobac (1-0, 1.82 ERA) to the bump to start the series and Fayetteville has yet to name their starters for the series.

The Fireflies will return home to Segra Park June 20 and they’ll stay home through July 3 as the Fireflies battle the Fredericksburg Nationals and the Augusta GreenJackets. The homestand will house our Negro League Celebration Weekend where the Fireflies become the Newark Eagles and will play the Chattanooga Choo-Choos and will conclude with our Independence Day Celebration with a massive fireworks show.
