Comets' Late Rally Falls Just Short in 5-4 Loss

Game Summary: Zach Ehrhard hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Oklahoma City Comets were unable to complete a comeback in a 5-4 loss to the El Paso Chihuahuas Thursday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. El Paso (18-36/53-76) built a 4-0 lead through five innings, scoring the first run of the game on a groundout in the second inning. The Chihuahuas added two runs in the third inning, including a RBI double by Marcos Castañon. A solo homer by Castañon in the fifth inning pushed El Paso’s lead to four runs. The Comets (30-24/71-57) first cracked the scoreboard in the sixth inning on a RBI double by Alex Freeland. El Paso quickly got the run back in its next at-bat when Ethan Salas connected on a RBI triple for a 5-1 advantage. Ehrhard’s homer in the ninth inning cut the deficit to one run and the Comets went on to bring the potential winning run to the plate with two outs, but were unable to complete the rally.

Of Note:

-The Comets lost for the third time in their series against El Paso, falling to 1-3 in the seven-game series…Oklahoma City is now 3-6 over the last nine games following a 15-3 stretch July 29-Aug. 18.

-Oklahoma City played in its fourth one-run game in the last five contests and seventh in the last nine games. Each of the Comets’ last six losses have all been by one run.

-Zach Ehrhard belted his 18th home run of the season and first since Aug. 13 against Albuquerque. The homer was his 11th of the season hit at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

-Hyeseong Kim has hit safely in four straight games as he recorded his third multi-hit outing during the stretch, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base Thursday. Over the four games, Kim is 8-for-13 (.615) with a triple, RBI and two stolen bases.

-Alex Freeland went 2-for-4 with a RBI as he connected on a double in a third consecutive game. Over the last three games, he is 5-for-12 with three doubles and two RBI.

-Ryan Fitzgerald finished with a single and has hit safely in each of the first four games of the series, batting .538 (7-for-13) with three extra-base hits and four RBI.

-Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith continued his Major League Rehab Assignment and made his second appearance of the series with the Comets. He went 0-for-3 and played seven innings at catcher…He was placed on the Dodgers’ Injured List June 11 with neck inflammation and was transferred to the 60-day IL July 21.

-Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Treinen tossed one-third of an inning as he pitched for the first time on back-to-back days during his Major League Rehab Assignment. He threw 15 pitches (8 strikes), allowing one walk…The three-time World Series champion and MLB All-Star was placed on the Dodgers’ 15-day IL June 20 with right elbow inflammation before being transferred to the 60-day IL Aug. 11.
