Game Summary: The Oklahoma City Comets broke a tie with four runs in the 11th inning to defeat the Round Rock Express, 7-3, Wednesday night at Dell Diamond. The Comets (35-24/76-57) took 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI double from James Tibbs III. Alek Thomas then hit a solo homer in the third inning to make it 2-0. Round Rock (33-26/65-69) got on the board with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third and took the lead with a two-run fourth inning, helped by three Oklahoma City errors. Thomas hit his second longball of the night in the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3. After neither team could break the deadlock through nine innings, the Comets left the go-ahead run at third base in the top of the 10th inning. Round Rock had the winning run at third base with one out but proceeded to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Comets scored four runs in the 11th inning, taking the lead on a RBI triple by Zach Ehrhard. Two more runs scored on a fielder’s choice coupled with a Round Rock throwing error, and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Ward extended the lead to 7-3. Round Rock went down in order during the bottom half of the frame.
Of Note:
-The Comets have won five straight games and six of their last seven games…Among the five straight wins, four have been last at-bat wins, including Wednesday.
-At 76-57 overall, the Comets are a season-best 19 games above .500...With a loss by first-place Sugar Land Wednesday, Oklahoma City is now 1.0 game behind the Space Cowboys with 16 games remaining in the PCL second half.
-The Comets have won their sixth straight game at Dell Diamond and have taken seven of eight games at the venue this season. OKC leads the season series over Round Rock, 13-7, and have clinched the season series for the sixth straight year.
-The Comets have gone to extra innings four times in the last 10 games and five times in the last 12 games…OKC played its first game to extend to 11 innings since April 11, 2025 at Round Rock.
-In his first game back with Oklahoma City after being optioned Tuesday, Alek Thomas swatted two home runs, going 2-for-5 with three runs scored. It’s his second multi-homer game this season, last done July 8 vs. El Paso, and the 17th multi-homer game by a Comet this year.
-Ryan Fitzgerald finished 1-for-5 with a walk to continue a nine-game hitting streak. He’s 14-for-34 (.412) with six extra-base hits and eight RBI during the streak...With 153 hits this season, Fitzgerald is now in a four-way tie for third in Bricktown-era single-season history.
-Cole Irvin recorded his 10th quality start of the year, tossing 6.0 innings with three runs (one earned), four hits and four strikeouts in a no decision…Irvin lowered his PCL-leading ERA to 3.33.
-Jake Cousins began a Major League Rehab assignment and tossed a scoreless seventh inning with one walk and one strikeout on 16 pitches (eight strikes). Cousins made his first appearance since June 7, 2025 as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
