Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Quakes dropped their fifth consecutive game and only their second game at home this season on Thursday night, in a 9-5 loss to Inland Empire. The loss is only the second to the 66ers this season in seven games.
Dodgers' lefty Rich Hill (0-1) struggled in his highly-anticipated rehab start. Hill lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits while striking out two and walking one, while throwing 29 total pitches.
The 66ers got to Hill early in the first inning, starting with Taylor Ward's two-run double. That was followed by a Brendon Sanger RBI single and another two-run double, this one from Jordan Serena to make it 5-0, Inland Empire.
In the second inning, the 66ers added on with a solo home run by Zach Gibbons and an RBI single by Ward, but the Quakes fought back in the bottom of the second inning.
Ibandel Isabel knocked in Luke Raley and Logan Landon followed that with an RBI single of his own. Will Smith then added a sacrifice fly that scored a run to cut the deficit to four runs at 7-3.
Isabel then smashed a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to make it 7-5, Inland Empire. The home run extended his California League-high to eight and gave him the League-lead in RBIs with 25.
The 66ers added on in the fifth with an RBI bunt base hit by Jake Yacinich and they put up an unearned run in the top of the seventh off of Quakes' reliever Alex Hermeling. Yacinich knocked that run in on a base hit to left to reach the 9-5 final score.
Adam Hofacket (2-0) was credited with the win by throwing the final three innings and not allowing a run.
The Quakes (14-14) are back home tomorrow, Friday, May 5, against the Inland Empire 66ers (13-15) for game two of the series at 7:05 PM. Right-hander Dennis Santana (1-2) for the Quakes while the 66ers will counter with right-hander Luis Pena (2-2).
