FredNats Swept in Doubleheader by Fayetteville

Fayetteville, N.C. - The Fredericksburg Nationals were swept in todays doubleheader getting walked off in a 5-4 loss in game one, before falling 4-0 in game two.

The FredNats entered game one of todays doubleheader in the lead, as last nights game was suspended after Hunter Hines hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. It picked back up in the bottom of the 3rd, and the Woodpeckers quickly tied the game. Arturo Flores hit a leadoff single, got to third as Fayetteville loaded the bases with no outs, then scored as Kevin Alvarez hit into a double play.

The score held until the top of the 6th, when Hunter Hines hit a two-out, three-run blast into right center-field, his 10th home run of the year in Single-A to put the FredNats up 4-1. Fayetteville would get a run back on a bases loaded walk in the 6th, then score two runs in the bottom of the 8th, including an unearned run the tied the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the 9th, the Woodpeckers walked it off on a Waner Luciano single for a 5-4 win.

In game two, the FredNats struggled to get anything going on offense. Woodpeckers starter Juan Fraide held a no-hitter into the 4th inning, allowing just two singles through his first five innings of work.

On the other side, RHP Marlon De La Cruz put together one of the best starts of his young career. The 20-year-old struckout a season- best seven, while walking a season low, one. De La Cruz ended up allowing a solo homer in the 2nd, then three runs in the 4th, the final two came across after a groundball hit off the tip of the second baseman’s glove and ended in a double.

With the two loss the FredNats drop back to two games below .500 in the second half. They’ll look to get back into the win column tomorrow with RHP Alexander Meckley set to start against RHP Ryan Verdugo. First pitch from Segra Stadium is set for 6:35 PM.
