Modesto, CA. - A five-run fifth lifted the Modesto Nuts over the San Jose Giants on Saturday night to an 8-2 win at John Thurman Field.
While Nick Neidert (W, 7-3) turned in the Nuts' (46-34; 7-3) sixth quality start in the last seven games, the offense knocked Mike Connolly (L, 4-6) around during their third trip to the plate.
Down by a run entering the bottom of the fifth, the Nuts recorded three straight hits to start the inning and load the bases. Chris Mariscal drilled a sac fly to tie the game. With runners at the corners, Joey Curletta was able to beat out a potential inning-ending doubleplay to allow Braden Bishop to score from third. With the inning extended, Luis Liberato knocked a single before Rayder Ascanio launched a three-run homer.
Neidert went six innings and allowed just two runs on five hits with three strike outs and two walks. Connolly lasted five innings and was hit for six runs on ten hits in his start for the Giants (35-45; 5-5).
Arturo Nieto homered in the sixth and Braden Bishop finished 4-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.
Bryan Bonnell threw the final two innings of the game to push the Nuts bullpen's scoreless streak to 12 innings.
