CORPUS CHRISTI - The Springfield Cardinals built an 8-0 lead over the first two frames Thursday night, carving out a 14-1 win over the Hooks before 3,752 fans at Whataburger Field.

Enduring its largest loss of the year, Corpus Christi aims to even the series at 2 Friday night.

The Cardinals, who were held to two singles in a 4-0 Hooks win Wednesday, snapped a 13-inning scoreless drought with two runs in the first inning. Springfield capitalized on two hit by pitches and a walk with three steals and a sacrifice fly, generating the production without a base hit.

The six-run second started with six straight walks and ended with only two singles recorded.

Hudson Leach and Jose Guedez teamed to blank the Cards from the third through the fifth. Guedez struck out three, retiring six of seven batters faced.

St. Louis top pitching prospect Liam Doyle kept the Hooks at bay until the sixth. Hector Salas drew a lead off walk and wound up scoring on a sac fly by Walker Janek.

Alejandro Nuñez went 1-for-3 with a walk, upping his hitting streak to nine games. Primarily an infielder, Nuñez also threw out a runner trying to score from left field.

Tyler Whitaker, who was 2-for-4 from the lead-off spot, has totaled five hits over the past two games.

Infielders Marcus Brown and Brandon Forrester were needed to cover the final two innings on the hill for CC. Forrester notched a scoreless ninth in his pro pitching debut.
