RENO, Nev. – Facing off against an opponent against whom they have had much success in franchise history, the Reno Aces found a groove and put up impressive offensive numbers en route to a 4-2 series victory at Greater Nevada Field against the Salt Lake Bees.

Each of Reno’s four victories came by five runs or more, starting with a 9-4 win the series opener on April 7. Locked at 3-3 following the third inning, the Aces exploded for a six-run fourth frame that was highlighted by a grand slam from Kristian Robinson to break the game open. Robinson’s second homer of 2026 was Reno’s first grand slam since A.J. Vukovich did it in 2025 on Sept. 17 against Las Vegas.

Though they scored first, the Aces were on the wrong side of an 8-3 score on April 8, until back-to-back five-run frames in the seventh and eighth innings put the contest away, 14-8. Power was again the feature for Reno as LuJames Groover blasted his first Triple-A homer of his career in grand fashion, coming with the bases loaded for insurance tallies in the eighth.

That marked the first time that the Aces have hit grand slams in consecutive games since they did so on April 29 and 30 in the 2025 campaign at Sacramento. The two grand slams in the first 11 games for Reno put them on pace for 27 by seasons end, which would be a franchise record.

The eighth came on the heels of a seventh inning that saw three RBI doubles push home five runs, marking the first time that Reno has scored five or more runs in consecutive innings since they also dropped back-to-back five-run frames at Las Vegas on Aug. 2025 in the fourth and fifth innings.

Among those doubles was one from Groover, helping him total six RBI on the night as part of a 3-for-5 effort. That made him the 27th Ace in team history to reach that mark (34 total occasions), and the first to do it since Adrian Del Castillo on July 13, 2025 against Tacoma.

Reno reached a season-best four consecutive wins after a 10-5 decision on April 9, pouring on offense late with three multi-run innings from the fifth through the ninth. The Aces trailed heading into the home half of the fifth, but Ryan Waldschmidt got things going with a bang thanks to his first Triple-A dinger out to left field.

Aramis Garcia continued the slugging in the fifth, launching his own homer in three-run fashion out to right field. It marked the fourth straight game that Aces catchers had hit a home run, which at the time was the most homers in the PCL by a team’s group of catchers. Additionally, it was the third homer in as many games for Garcia, which is now tied for the longest homer streak in the PCL.

It was a big night at the dish for Waldschmidt aside from his homer, as he finished a double away from the cycle. Had he achieved the feat, it would have been the first by an Ace since Cooper Hummel did it in Sacramento on July 31, 2021.

As a team the Aces produced 14 hits in both their wins on April 8 and April 9, marking the first time they have reached that mark in consecutive contests since they did it on Aug. 1 (16) and Aug. 2 (16) last season against Las Vegas. In total, Reno achieved the feat five times in 2025.

Starter Kohl Drake was solid in the contest, as the reigning PCL Pitcher of the Week picked up his first win after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

Salt Lake avoided a series sweep with a 6-3 win on April 10 despite five Aces tallying multiple hits in the contest. Of that five included Ivan Melendez, who crushed his first homer of the season during the fourth frame.

Late offense was yet again a theme for Reno in an 8-3 defeat of the Bees on April 11, plating six runs from the fifth through seventh innings. Four runs scored in the seventh thanks to a pair of two-run homers from two of Arizona’s top prospects in Waldschmidt (No. 1) and Tommy Troy (No. 4), with Troy’s coming in spectacular fashion.

Sitting in a 1-2 count, Troy hammered a Hunter Strickland offering an eye-popping 462 feet out to center field. Not only is that the longest home run by an Ace this season, it is also the longest homer in the PCL. For Troy, it was his first home run at Greater Nevada Field (fourth at Triple-A), as all three of his homers in 2025 came on the road.

Those two homers marked the eighth straight game that the Aces had left the yard with a dinger, which is the longest such streak in the PCL this season. It was also the fifth total time that Reno has hit two homers in a game this season, and the Aces are a perfect 5-0 when doing so.

Unfortunately for Reno the series concluded with defeat, as the Bees took a 5-2 decision on April 12. The Aces scored once in the first and eighth despite five combined hits from Troy and Groover, the former going 3-for-5 with a double while the latter was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

For Groover, he drove in at least one run in all six games, which is the longest active streak in all Triple-A (tied for longest total). For the series Groover was 10-for-21 (.476) with three doubles, one homer, 13 RBI, six walks, and a 1.333 OPS. The 13 RBI led the PCL for the week while his average was fourth best among those with 10 or more at bats for the week. The only names on the list ahead of Groover were a pair of Sacramento (Jesus Rodriguez, .571; Bryce Eldridge, .500) and his teammate, Anderdson Rojas.

That production earned Groover PCL Player of the Week honors, the second straight week that an Ace has earned weekly recognition from the league. Just a week before it was Kohl Drake with his five no-hit frames at Albuquerque.

It was just as impressive a series for Rojas, who was a combined 10-for-20 (.500) with four runs scored, one double, one RBI, and four walks leading to a .583 on-base percentage. A little further down that list was Waldschmidt (tied for 11th), who was a combined 9-for-22 (.409) with seven runs scored, one double, one triple, two homers, five RBI, two walks and a 1.298 OPS.

From the mound there was seven Aces pitchers that worked 1.2 scoreless innings or more, which included two victories and 3.1 innings by Yilber Díaz. He ended as the winning pitcher on both April 8 and 11, which saw him go 2.1 frames on April 11. That marked the second time in his career he was worked more than two innings as a reliever at Triple-A.

Next week continues Reno’s longest homestand of the season, as Silver State rivalry between the Aces and the Las Vegas Aviators renews on Tuesday, April 14 at 6:05 p.m. PT from Greater Nevada Field.
