RENO, Nev. – Following a tough series defeat in Salt Lake, the Reno Aces (15-36, 52-74) return to Greater Nevada Field to host the Sacramento River Cats (30-21, 66-60), the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
The clubs have met 12 times this season, with Sacramento holding the upper hand, winning eight of those matchups. Reno’s offense has struggled against River Cats pitching, though AJ Vukovich has been a bright spot, launching four home runs and driving in 13 runs across 11 games versus Sacramento.
Sacramento enters the series fresh off a four-win set against the El Paso Chihuahuas. The River Cats have been strong in the second half, posting a 30-21 record, good for third in the Pacific Coast League and just two games back of first-place Tacoma.
Notable players on Sacramento’s roster include 1B Bryce Eldridge and INF/OF Marco Luciano.
Eldridge, the Giants’ No. 1 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has impressed in 49 games with Sacramento, slashing .232/.303/.497 with seven doubles, 14 home runs, and 49 RBI. He stood out in the El Paso series, homering twice with six RBI. The left-handed slugger has done most of his damage against right-handed pitching, hitting .241/.320/.526 with 11 home runs and 39 RBI, and has thrived in big moments, batting .296 with six home runs and 35 RBI with runners in scoring position.
Luciano has also been a problem for Reno this season, going 11-for-37 (.297) with one double, six home runs, and 17 RBI against the Aces. He has hit well on the road in 2024, slashing .233/.343/.486 with 15 doubles, one triple, 15 home runs, and 40 RBI. The versatile infielder has also handled left-handed pitching effectively, hitting .278 with seven home runs and 27 RBI.
On Reno’s side, AJ Vukovich remains the player to watch. The outfielder was recently named Pacific Coast League Player of the Week after going 8-for-15 (.533) with a double, three home runs, and five RBI against Salt Lake. He has been scorching hot in August, hitting .397/.472/.746 with six home runs and 16 RBI in 16 games. Vukovich will look to carry that momentum into this week’s series.
