LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The International League has named Gwinnett Braves' left-hander Andrew Albers its Pitcher of the Week for July 13-16.
Albers, 31, went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one start during the abbreviated week, July 14 at Charlotte. He tossed a season-high 8.0 scoreless, four-hit innings, walked one and struck out six in a 104-pitch, 74-strike outing to lead the G-Braves to a 6-1 victory over the Knights. The win was his third straight and team-leading ninth on the season.
Signed by the Atlanta Braves as a minor league free agent on December 26, 2016, Albers is 9-3 with a 3.27 ERA (31 ER in 85.1 IP) and six quality starts in 21 games (12 starts) with Gwinnett this season. As of July 17, he ranks among IL pitching leaders in wins (T-2nd), ERA (6th), strikeouts (T-6th, 88) and WHIP (10th, 1.24).
Albers is the 19th pitcher in Gwinnett's nine-year history to win the IL Pitcher of the Week award and the second to win it this season. Right-hander Lucas Sims was the league's Pitcher of the Week for April 17-23. It is the second IL Pitcher of the Week award of Albers' career, as he also won it with Rochester on May 15, 2016.
