The Tulsa Drillers were on the wrong side of history on Thursday night. San Antonio Missions starter Logan Allen and reliever Jason Jester combined to no-hit the Drillers, while sealing a 6-0 win and series sweep.
It was the first-ever no-hitter at ONEOK Field, the home for the Drillers since the 2010 Texas League season.
The game began as a pitcher's duel with Tulsa starter Logan Bawcom cruising through the first four innings, only allowing two hits. But the Missions offense awoke in a big way in the top of the fifth. Michael Gettys and Taylor Kohlwey started the inning with back-to-back homers. A single and another homer by Fernando Tatis Jr. quickly doubled the San Antonio lead.
After another single and a fielding error, Chad Girodo came in from the bullpen and hit the first man he faced to load the bases. A sacrifice fly and a RBI double by Peter Van Gansen put San Antonio in front 6-0.
The Drillers did not have an answer Allen. The southpaw faced the minimum until Connor Joe walked in the fourth inning. An inning later, Drew Jackson worked a leadoff walk and reached second after a wild pitch. Tyler Colvin and Yusniel Díaz drew walks in the sixth inning, but these would be the only Drillers baserunners of the night.
Jester replaced Allen in the bottom of the eighth and promptly got a lineout, strikeout and a groundout to put San Antonio three outs away from history.
Jester returned for the ninth and quickly got the first two outs. D.J. Peters then hit a soft grounder back to the mound that rolled under the pitcher's glove. Jester scrambled to the ball and threw wildly past the first baseman, allowing Peters to reach second on the error. Jackson was the next batter, and worked a full count before striking out swinging to seal the no-hitter and the 6-0 win for the Missions.
WHAT YOU MISSED
This was the first no-hitter in ONEOK Field History. The last time the Drillers were no-hit was in 2010 when Ryan Brasier of Arkansas no-hit Tulsa in Little Rock.
The Drillers lead the Texas League with 72 home runs, but the Missions pitching staff has caused a power outage. Tulsa has not hit a long-ball in three consecutive games which is a season-high.
Andrew Istler provided a bright spot for the Drillers. The right-handed reliever retired all six batters he faced while striking out four.
Tulsa was also blanked by the Missions on Wednesday. It marks the first time in over two years that the Drillers were shut out in consecutive games. The last time was May 20-21, 2016 at Northwest Arkansas. Current Kansas City Royals hurler Eric Skoglund was the starter in the second game.
UP NEXT
The Drillers will be happy to see San Antonio leave town, but it will get no easier as the red-hot Corpus Christi Hooks will be in ONEOK Field Friday to open a three-game series. Friday's opener will begin at 7:05 p.m. with FOX23 Friday Night Fireworks Show presented by U.S. Cellular scheduled for after the game. The pitching matchup will be:
TUL      Parker Curry (4-1, 3.45 ERA)
CC        Framber Valdez (2-1, 5.32 ERA)
