Pedro Álvarez belted a solo home run, but the Durham Bulls got a strong start from Yonny Chirinos and some late offense to charge past the Tides 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Álvarez connected on a no-doubt blast into right field for his 17th home run of the season. His 17 home runs are now tied for 4th-most in the International League, and are already the 5th-most in a single season by a Tides player since Norfolk became an Orioles affiliate in 2007.
The home run was the only run Chirinos (7-3) would allow, as the 23-year-old limited the Tides to six hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 11 batters over seven innings of work. Chirinos faced just two batters over the minimum after yielding Álvarez's blast as he helped the Bulls take game three of the four-game set.
Norfolk starter Gabriel Ynoa (1-7) did not allow a hit over his first four frames before the Bulls plated a pair of runs against him in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Ynoa yielded six runs (four earned) on seven hits, walking two while striking out three.
Logan Schafer singled twice in the setback, while David Washington added a double to extend his on-base streak to 28 consecutive games. The 28-game stretch is the third-longest in the IL this season, one game shy of 29-game runs put together by Rochester's Zack Granite and Durham's Jake Bauers.
The Tides will wrap up their homestand on Monday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 7:05. Tyler Wilson (2-4, 4.73) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Hunter Wood (1-1, 9.22). There will be a postgame fireworks show on Monday, courtesy of Geico Military.
