The Greeneville Astros (16-13) took on the first place Pulaski Yankees (21-9) Saturday night for game two of their three game series. After a tie game through five innings, the Yankees prevailed to the tune of a 10-6 victory.
Both teams started off hot in the first inning, quickly putting runs on the scoreboard. Yankees third baseman Andres Chaparro hit a solo home run to left field, his fourth of the year, putting the Yankees on top early. Without missing a beat, designated hitter Colton Shaver answered back in the bottom of the first, hitting his own two-run blast to left center field. Shaver stepped up to the plate after a Frankeny Fernandez single and launched his second home run in as many days giving the Astros a 2-1 lead.
That lead didn't last long as Pulaski scored one run in the top of the second. With back-to-back walks to start the inning, Eduardo Torrealba grounded into a force out at third base, but a run would score and Torrealba advanced to second on a throwing error. Greeneville was able to retire the next two batters and hold the damage to only one run.
Greeneville put three runs of their own on the board in the bottom of the second, regaining the lead. First baseman Jose Benjamin walked and found himself on third base after a stolen base and a wild pitch. Second baseman Reiny Beltre knocked in Benjamin with an RBI single scoring the first of the Astros three runs. After a Cody Bohanek single, Fernandez notched his second hit of the game with a two-run double that sliced into the left field corner.
Steven Sensley started the top of the third for the Yankees with a leadoff home run on a fly ball to left center field cutting the Astros lead to 5-3. After a Chaparro walk, first baseman Eric Wagaman hit his ninth double of the season putting runners at second and third with no outs. Leobaldo Cabrera then stepped up to the plate and recorded an RBI groundout bringing the Astros lead down to only one run.
With no runs scored in the fourth or fifth innings, Pulaski opened up the sixth tying the game at five runs apiece. A throwing error to start the inning put a runner in scoring position. After recording two fly outs, a two-out RBI single leveled the game once again. Chaparro would give Pulaski the lead in the seventh inning on a two-run home run to left field, his second of the game.
Extending their lead, the Yankees added another three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Ryan Lidge flew out to begin the inning, but a walk and a single gave the Yankees runners on first and second with only one out. Yelson Corredera singled on a line drive to left scoring one and putting runners on the corners. Another costly error by the Astros on a ball hit to second base scored two more runs making it a 10-5 lead in favor of the Yankees.
The Astros were able to plate one run in the bottom of the ninth, but their rally was snuffed out by the Yankees. With Cody Bohanek getting hit by a pitch and Shaver walking, Brody Westmoreland singled to right scoring Bohanek. Unable to record another hit, the Astros stranded two runners giving the Yankees a 10-6 victory.
Greeneville looks to avoid the sweep tomorrow night in the series finale against Pulaski. Greeneville will send Hansel Paulino to the bump with first pitch set for 6:00pm.
